QTemp is a sun safety wearable and companion app that measures the UV index and air temperature of your current location, and lets you know how long you can stay outside before developing a sunburn. QTemp is a comprehensive and personalizable tool that will help you to avoid sun-related skin damage like sunburns, premature aging, and skin cancer.

UV index (UVI) reflects the strength of UV radiation at a specific time and location, on a scale from 1 to 11+. The UVI indicates potential danger of Sun exposure to help individuals make healthy choices. To read more, visit our blog post.

Yes, the QTemp device sends all measured data to your smartphone. You should download the free QTemp app from Google Play, the App Store or the Microsoft store.

The QTemp app is available for free on Google Play and the App Store.

No, the QTemp device doesn’t require an internet connection to measure and transmit data.

The QTemp device is compatible with iOS 9.3+ devices and Android 5.0+ devices with Bluetooth Low Energy support.

QTemp connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

  1. Ensure your smart Bluetooth (BLE) is ON.
  2. Run the latest version of the QTemp App.
  3. Tap the Bluetooth button (right-bottom) on the QTemp app to start using your QTemp.

“Time to Burn” shows how long you can be exposed to the Sun before developing a sunburn. It is calculated based on the UV index, environmental condition, your skin type, and sunscreen applied. However, “Time to Burn” does not mean there is a safe level of unprotected Sun exposure. When UV levels reach 3 or higher, most people need to use Sun protection.

For the most accurate Time To Burn, you’ll need to enter your skin type, environmental situation, and whether or not you’re wearing sunscreen. If you’re using QTemp Lite (i.e., if you don’t have a QTemp device), you’ll also need to enter your location.

The first time you use the QTemp app, you’ll be prompted on the homepage to set up your profile. Tap the text and enter your information. Don’t forget to take the skin type quiz to get the most accurate sun safety tips.

Open the menu and select the profile icon. Select “find my skin type” to take the quiz to find your skin type.

From the homepage, select the icon at the bottom in the middle. Select the option that best represents your current environment.

From the homepage, select the sunscreen icon at the bottom left. When the icon is dark, QTemp assumes you’re wearing SPF30+ sunscreen. When the icon is lighter, QTemp assumes you’re not wearing SPF30+ sunscreen.

From the homepage, select the magnifying glass at the top right. Enter and select your preferred city.

Pressing the play button beneath your Time To Burn will start your Time To Burn countdown. Select this button when you go outdoors. Keep in mind that while your Time To Burn countdown is running, you won’t be able to change information in your profile, your sunscreen information, your environmental setting, or your location. If you wish to change any of this information, pause the countdown, and select the reset arrow.

You have probably paused your Time To Burn countdown, but not fully reset it. If you wish to change this information, select the reset arrow to fully reset your Time To Burn countdown.

Yes. Start your Time To Burn countdown when you first go outdoors by pressing the play button on the homepage. When you go indoors, press the pause button. When you go back outdoors, press the resume button. Keep in mind that the harmful effects of sun exposure are cumulative, and taking breaks does not lessen the total damage caused by UV rays. This feature is not meant to be used as a tool for “safe” tanning.

Unfortunately, no. If you reset your Time To Burn, your QTemp app will assume that you have not already exposed your skin to the sun for a duration of time. The harmful effects of sun exposure are cumulative, so it is not safe to rely on the Time To Burn if you reset the countdown while still exposing your skin to the sun.

Your QTemp needs to know the UV index to provide you with sun safety tips. To get the most accurate UV index, make sure the sensor on the front of the device is exposed to as much sun as you are. Your QTemp won’t be able to give you accurate sun safety tips if it’s hidden in your pocket or covered by a piece of clothing. Ensure that your QTemp and a connected mobile device are within the maximum Bluetooth range (10m).

Once you have inputted your skin type, environment setting, and applied sunscreen, you will get a Time to Burn countdown. Pressing the play button beneath your Time To Burn will start your Time To Burn countdown. The alert will go off when your countdown is done. You can use this setting as a reminder to reapply sunscreen!

Tap the sidebar button (three lines on top left) > Settings (gear sign) > Ensure the Alert Sound icon is red. If it is gray, tap the button to turn on reminders.

Tap the sidebar button (three lines on top left) > Settings (gear sign) > If the Alert Sound icon is red, tap it once. When the Alert Sound icon is gray, reminders are off.

The icons below the UV index on the homepage of the QTemp app indicate which types of sun protection to use for your current conditions (e.g. sunscreen, sunglasses, hat).

If you would like to use QTemp to monitor the Sun exposure of someone else, make sure to clip the device onto their clothing or in a place that will be exposed to the same amount of sunlight as them. Input their personal information into the profile, including their skin type, environment setting, and applied sunscreen. Set an alert if you would like to receive a notification when it’s time to help them reapply sunscreen.

Yes. From the homepage, simply swipe to the left to see the hourly and daily weather forecasts.

Open the side menu → tap the settings icon → change between °C and °F.

Tap the sidebar button (three lines on top left) > Settings (gear sign) > Weight/Height > Choose your preferred units (metric or imperial).

Your QTemp app will notify you when it’s time to change the battery on your QTemp device. To do so, you’ll need a coin and a new CR2032 battery. If you remove the battery, you will lose your recent sun exposure data that has not synchronized with your QTemp app.

Tap the sidebar button (three lines on top left) > Settings (gear sign) > Reading interval > Choose your preferred reading interval. The less frequently your QTemp device reads data, the less battery power your QTemp device will use.

You can follow these steps to try to restore your connection.

With a reading interval of 5 minutes, QTemp will store data for 1 month.

You are currently using the Lite version of the QTemp App. Some features such as reminders and Weather Camera are exclusive to QTemp device owners. You can order your own QTemp here.

The QTemp device has a replaceable regular coin cell battery (CR2032). Battery life depends on the frequency of measurements. If you set the measurement interval to every 10 minutes, the battery lasts for a minimum of 45 days. You can choose to take measurements less often to further increase the battery life.

No, QTemp cannot be turned off, but you can increase the reading interval to save battery.

Like many wearables, QTemp is splash and rain resistant but cannot be totally immersed in water.

No, QTemp is calibrated so there is no need for additional user calibration.

No, QTemp is not a medical device. It just measures ambient temperature.

For optimal protection, sunglass lenses must block both UVA and UVB rays. Side protection is also needed in extreme UV environments, for example during hiking or skiing. UV exposure to the eyes is cumulative over a lifetime and may cause irreversible damage. If you have any concerns, consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

For best results, use a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. We suggest an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply a thick and even layer of sunscreen to all exposed body parts 15 minutes before going outside. Please note that the difference in Sun protection for SPFs above 30 is very little. To know more about SPF, visit our blog post.

Air temperature does not affect the UV index or your risk of developing a sunburn. To read more, visit our blog post.

Sunlight without sun protection is a desired source of vitamin D for some. Users can use the Safe Sun Time feature to estimate the amount of time they can spend in the Sun before developing a sunburn. To do this, input your skin type, environment setting, and set the “Sunscreen” toggle to off. This will provide an estimate of how long you can stay in the Sun without sunscreen if you are looking to get vitamin D. Please note that the American Academy of Dermatology recommends getting your vitamin D from dietary sources and/or supplements as opposed to exposing your skin to UVB rays.

UV exposure comes from the sun as well as reflective surfaces in your environment. For example, grass reflects up to 10% of UV radiation, while fresh snow reflects as much as 80%. Inputting your environment allows QTemp to determine your Time to Burn more accurately.
